Did you know the pineapple is considered the international symbol of hospitality?

Pineapples are thought to have originated in South America.  They made their way to the Caribbean after centuries of migration and commerce and were first discovered by Europeans in 1493.  In the early 17th century American colonists began importing the fruit from the Caribbean.  That’s a well-traveled fruit!

Due to its exotic quality and long boat ride, pineapples were difficult to find in early America making them a rare delicacy and a status symbol. The presentation of pineapple was seen as the highest form of graciousness and hospitality because the hosts obviously spared no expense in welcoming guests into their home.

It is also said that New England sea captains returning from the Caribbean or Pacific would place a pineapple outside they’re home as a symbol of a safe return.
